한국인들은 평소에 ‘추워 죽겠다, 지겨워 죽겠다, 배고파 죽겠다’ 등 ‘죽다’는 단어를 이용해 어떤 상태나 느낌이 매우 심하다는 표현을 많이 합니다. 영어에도 일상대화에서 자주 쓰이는 ‘죽음’과 관련된 다양한 표현이 있습니다.

Death/dead/dying은 대부분 ‘very’나 ‘extremely’를 의미합니다.
I was freezing to death. = I was extremely cold.
Common uses：worried to death, starving to death, bored to death
Dead wrong = to be totally wrong
Common uses： dead set on/against, dead serious
I’m dying to see you. = I really want to see you.
Common uses： dying to try that restaurant, dying to meet him

Jess：Sorry, sorry. (whispering to Steve) Well, I’m dead set on enjoying it.
        (정말 죄송합니다. (Steve에게 속삭이며) 이제 영화 보는 것에 죽은 듯이 집중해야겠군.)
Steve：Let’s just skip out and go watch some TV. (그냥 나가서 TV나 보자.)
Jess：Ha! Over my dead body! (하! 죽어도 안 돼!!!)
Steve：Man, they must be making a killing on this movie.
        (이봐, 그들은 틀림없이 이 영화로 떼돈을 벌었을 거야.)

Steve：That’s a lot of cash for a dumb movie. (이 재미없는 영화에 과분한 돈이지.)
Jess：Hey, why are you here in the theater then, watching it for the second time?!?

Steve：I am just killing time. (그냥 시간 때우는 거야.)
Jess：Aaaah, you’re killing me! (아아, 날 죽이는 소리군.)
